Galileo Figaro Magnifico

Although most listeners may not appreciate the significance of the phrase in the Queen song “Bohemian Rhapsody,” the actual lyric is Galileo Figaro Magnifico.

The English translation of the Latin phrase Galileo Figaro Magnifico is “Magnify the Galilean’s image” and in ancient Rome, “Galileo” was the name of Jesus Christ. To add to the confusion about the inclusion of the phrase is the fact that Galileo is also the name of the Italian astronomer and scientist who created the first working telescope and the first human being to view the planet Mercury through a telescope!

April 15, 1947

It was on April 15, 1947, seven years before the start of the civil rights movement, that Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier, making his Major League debut with the Brooklyn Dodgers and becoming the first Black player to appear in a modern-day Major League Baseball game.

In 2004, then MLB Commissioner Bud Selig announced that Major League Baseball would celebrate Jackie Robinson Day on every April 15, to commemorate the day Robinson debuted in the majors in 1947. It has become a tradition that on April 15th each year, every player and manager for every Major League Baseball team wears Robinson’s number – 42!

“I wanted a perfect ending. Now I’ve learned, the hard way, that some poems don’t rhyme, and some stories don’t have a clear beginning, middle, and end. Life is about not knowing, having to change, taking the moment and making the best of it, without knowing what’s going to happen next. Delicious Ambiguity.”
