John Bateman

John Bateman purchased land on the western shore of Port Phillip, Melbourne, from the local Aboriginals. John Batman was an early colonist, postmaster and general store owner in Fremantle, and an investor in the Fremantle Whaling Company. Today, the suburb of Bateman is named after him and his family. John Bateman’s grandson, William Augustus (Bill) Bateman, introduced Australian rules football to Western Australia.
